Sushi unrolled at The Fatty Bao this Summer!

Spring is the time for Sakura Matsuri or Cherry Blossom festival in Japan and I really wish to visit Japan once to enjoy this beauty. You will be wondering why I am mentioning about Cherry Blossom festival here. Japan is also famous for its gastronomic art in the form Sushi. Sushi is made of sticky rice, vinegar, fillings or toppings like vegetables, raw or cooked fish, and meat which often made using wrapped seaweed (Nori).  It’s time to say ‘Kanpai’ (Cheers in Japanese) as The Fatty Bao – the Asian Gastrobar is having a ‘Sushi Unrolled’ menu from March 22nd – April 8th, 2018. They have come up with 14 different Sushis, beyond our imagination and expectations; all inspired by the popular food from across the world. I was invited for a preview of this fest and savored some of the most amazing Sushis till date.

The Fatty Bao’s Executive Chef Prashanth has carefully curated this menu which consists of Cross Bred Tuna Pizza Sushi, Smoked Mackerel Sandwich Sushi, The Liberal Tobimayo Pita Pocket Sushi, Cheesy Beef Roll Sushi, Spicy Tempura Fried Prawn Roll Sushi, Rainbow Spin Sandwich Sushi, Cross Bred Salmon Taco to name few. From toppings to flavors and shapes and sizes, I was totally flabbergasted with this new Sushi experience along with some Edamame.

Traditionally Sushi is eaten with pickled ginger (Gari), Soya sauce and Wasabi. Though The Fatty Bao served all the accompaniments, one really doesn’t require all those as the Sushi itself is a burst of flavors. The Liberal Tobimayo Pita Pocket Sushi was a hit among all of us which was made of Crab meat, Tobiko mayo, chives, bonito flakes, shallots, avocado, crispy Gari and prawn crackers.

Another favorite was the Cross Bred Salmon Taco Sushi like the famous Mexican Tacos but with a Japanese Twist. This had flavors of Spicy Salmon, Sriracha Mayo, Yuzu Salsa, Avocado, and Tobiko.
Can you imagine Sushi in a Pizza form? I just couldn’t believe my eyes when they presented the ‘Cross Bred Tuna Pizza Sushi’ in front of us. This was such a beautiful and artistic dish which was well plated and rice was used as pizza base. If you are not a Tuna lover, then go for the veg version of this.

I enjoyed all the Sushis served and hope they will add some of the best ones on their menu. Why should Japanese have all the fun in Spring? This light, filling and tasty Sushis can be a great summer food for us as well.

We also got a chance to explore some of the dishes from their new menu –

Cold Green Tea Noodle Salad – A refreshing cold salad with hues of Green and for that extra oomph factor there was slices of Baby radish and chillies. This salad is a perfect way to begin your meal, especially for Bangalore’s current weather.

Smoked Sriracha Pork Spare Ribs – I just loved the flavors from this dish. The meat was so tender, juicy and had intense flavors of Sriracha sauce.

After a couple of rounds of Sushis, no one really cares about desserts but when you are at The Fatty Bao, you can’t miss their Michelin style plated desserts. We tried the Warm Apricot Pudding, Peanut Butter and Milk Chocolate Torte, and Brick Toast and it’s hard to say which one was the best. My vote goes for the 1st and 3rd one which had a bit of citrusy flavors and to balance the flavors there were ice creams and fruit compotes as well.

I enjoyed this hearty meal with a glass of Bora Bora which was Vodka and Gin based drink with a dash of passion fruit, green apple pieces and topped with coconut water - a perfect summer cooler I would say.

Nom.. nom.. nom.. Though all the Sushis were brilliantly done, I would go back to relish the ‘The Liberal Tobimayo Pita Pocket Sushi’, ‘Spicy Tempura Fried Prawn Roll Sushi’, and ‘Cheesy Beef Roll Sushi’. Do visit The Fatty Bao (Bangalore, Mumbai, and Kolkata) for a great Sushi experience never before. A meal for two would be ₹1500/- :)

Ride | Refresh | Recharge at Ciclo Café, Indiranagar

Disclaimer –I was into sports and games for 15 years. But now, I am the laziest girl ever. Still, if I get a chance I would love to actively participate in any sports activity which I used to do before. So when a bunch of us, foodies decided to brunch at Ciclo Café – India’s first Café for cycle enthusiasts, I was so keen to know about this Café and their activities. Ciclo (pronounced as Cheeklo) located at Indiranagar 12th Main is the ultimate hub for Cycle lovers. Their motto is simple – Ride, Refresh and Recharge. To name few Ciclo has all major brand bikes like Mongoose, Bianchi, Cannondale, GT, Montra, etc and from jersey to helmet they have all accessories for cycle lovers. Their presence is there in major cities including Chennai, Hyderabad, Gurgaon, Coimbatore, and Bangalore.

Ciclo Café is where riders or people who love to explore new stuffs have a relaxing time. I love the cycle themed ambiance. Right from the Chandeliers made of Cycle wheels and chains, wherever you look you will spot some element related to cycle. Décor has been perfectly done according to Ciclo Café’s concept. They also have got a Deli with an array of desserts on display and also you can buy your favorite breads.

This time I was keen on Brunch than cycling. I didn’t ride due to a recent operation I underwent. My fellow foodie friends had a great time spinning. Currently, they are having a burger festival going on, so we tried few burgers as well. I started my brunch with a hot cup of Moroccan tea.

As we were a bigger group, we tried various dishes from their menu. My friend Sheetal suggested few must-try dishes and whatever I tried were finger-licking awesome especially the Pulled pork and Pineapple burger, Waffles with Egg Benedict and Bacon, and sliders (Mushroom, Lamb, and Pork). They serve fries/wedges and salad along with burgers. After tasting Ciclo Popeye Omelette from my friend’s plate, I ordered a fluffy Masala omelette which was good. These are from their breakfast menu.

I ordered a Mint White Chocolate shake which perfectly balanced the flavors while enjoying the omelette.

Desserts for brunch? I don’t mind and tried Ciclo special Dark Chocolate Ganache Cake and Hazelnut cake. I loved the creamy, melt-in-mouth Hazelnut Chocolate cake. It gives that foodgasmic feeling. I was  not a Hazelnut lover but this dessert just changed my mind.

Overall I enjoyed the brunch at Ciclo Café this time and next on my list is to go for cycling with my hubby and enjoy a meal at this Café soon. A meal for two would be ₹1000 (approximately).

Check out this new casual dining restaurant in Koramangala - Market Table

I found a gem kind of place recently – Market Table at Koramangala 5th Block. Located near Chianti and Bon South, it’s a beautiful Café which is less than a month old. Market Table name is inspired by the European Market culture. The use of wood for furniture and other interior elements is the main highlight of this place. They’ve done it brilliantly and once you sit back and relax, you won’t feel like leaving this place. They serve only organic food, yeah you heard it right. A former Chef and now Director of Market Table, Mr.Nirmal carefully sources the ingredients. Even the chicken they serve is antibiotic free. And the most interesting part is that you will be surprised to see their reasonably priced menu for a prime location like Koramangala. Their menu consists of European, Mediterranean, and Oriental cuisines.

Soup

My friend and I started our lunch with a soup – Cilantro Chicken soup. With a burst of flavors, the soup was really good and it was a great start to our lunch.

Appetizers

Wheat Chia Rolls –Mini wheat Chia rolls filled with Jalapenos, sweet corn, Insalata, grilled cheese, choice of your filling (veggies/Cajun Chicken/BBQ Shrimps) and served with salsa. I liked the veg and shrimp rolls most. Do I need to mention that Spinach infused wheat roll is healthy to the core? These are great post-workout snack options.

M.T Start-Up Chicken – Oven roasted Chicken Thigh with Barbeque sauce, dipping sauce, and salads. When you try this starter, you will realize the difference with regular chicken we have and antibiotic free chicken (free range chicken). This was literally a platter full of happiness. I loved the barbeque flavors.

Drinks

Golden Vitality – The turmeric drink was more like a detox drink. Nowadays everyone knows about the health benefits of Turmeric and this drink can be a perfect summer cooler.

Popeye’s Virtue at me – A Watermelon drink with apple ice and cucumber was another favorite in our table. These drinks go well with the main course dishes.

If you don’t like health drinks then go for banana-yogurt based smoothies like Strawberry Confection and Berry Punch. Healthy drinks with no added sugar. They use maple syrup for smoothies.

Main course

I must say, it’s hard to find any place which is a treat for your palate. I love every dishes I tried at the Market Table. Every item we tried was cooked to perfection and MT team has done a great job.

Mt Signature lamb – Thin slices of grilled Lamb with lettuce, mixed peppers, jalapenos, cherry tomatoes, grilled onions served with in-house special dressing. They served it with Red rice and if you miss Indian food, then this can be a great option. The generous topping of feta chunks will give a different feeling altogether.

Grilled Asian Spiced Bowl – A flavorful one bowl meal with Prawns, lettuce, veggies, orange wedges, and peppers tossed in Thai dressing. Prawns lacked a bit of flavor from the dressing. But combined with other ingredients, this one was my favorite dish of the day.

Mexican Street bowl – This tasty bowl was made with Chicken, lettuce, cherry tomatoes, avocado, pineapple chunks, Cajun lemon dressing and Quinoa as an add-on. My friend was so happy to get her daily dose of Quinoa.

Desserts

Vanilla Yogurt with mixed berries Truffle – Though flavors were amazing the texture of this frozen yogurt could have been better I felt. With mixed berry Truffles and crumbs, the combo was heavenly. I love the way they presented the dessert with edible flowers.

They believe in using fresh ingredients, olive oil, and zero refined sugar at the Market Table; so one can have a guilt-free meal. We had so many dishes and yet while leaving we were not feeling heavy at all and that may be because of the healthy salad servings and carefully handpicked fresh ingredients they use. Overall my experience at this new all-day dining place was lovely and I will surely go back soon. A meal for two would be ₹600/- (approximately).
